Iran Speeding Up Nuclear Program
Iran Speeding Up Nuclear Program - Mike Evans - Jerusalem Prayer TeamIran is moving full speed ahead with its nuclear program, despite Western economic sanctions aimed at halting Tehranís atomic progress.

According to diplomatic sources contacted by Reuters, the Islamic Republic is rapidly increasing the number of advanced uranium enrichment centrifuges installed at its Natanz underground plant. Diplomatic sources estimate between 500-600 so-called IR-2m centrifuges and empty centrifuge casings have now been put into place at the Natanz enrichment facility, located in central Iran. Just two months ago, the facility had 180 of the centrifuges, according to an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report on Iran, issued in February.

Last month, the Islamic Republic announced its intention to build about 3,000 advanced centrifuges, however some Western experts and diplomats have questioned whether Iran had the capability and materials needed to produce such a large number of centrifuges and to run them smoothly.

If hundreds of new centrifuges have now been installed, it will be problematic for some Western nations, according to nuclear expert Mark Fitzpatrick from the International Institute for Strategic Studies. "It indicates that Iran has made a significant breakthrough both in mastering the technology and in acquiring the raw materials,Ē he said. "This development will be of major concern to countries that are worried about Iranís growing ability to quickly produce nuclear weapons.Ē

According to unidentified diplomats, the new centrifuges are not yet operational, but indicate Iran is moving quickly to replace its older 1970s era IR-1 machines. Centrifuges spin at supersonic speed to increase the fissile concentration of enriched uranium that can be used for either nuclear energy or to produce weapons.

Iran claims to be enriching uranium for a planned network of nuclear power plants, but the West believes the work is in preparation for the development of nuclear weapons and wants the program halted. Talks between Iran and world powers this month failed to yield a diplomatic breakthrough on the standoff, and both the United States and Israel havenít ruled out military action as a last resort to prevent Tehran obtaining nuclear weapons.
